Three-Day Tour
Day 1
I-5 to Castle Rock, exit 49, take SR 504 to the Visitor Information Exhibit Hall to learn of the volcano and its eruption in May of 1980. Travel on through Toutle and Kid Valley and stop at the Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center, which features on-site glassblowing by the original Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Ash Glassworks. (call for times of glassblowing presentations). From there you can visit the Coldwater Visitor Center and the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Return to Chehalis for dinner at Kit Carson Restaurant and a relaxing evening at Parkplace Best Western Inn.
Day 2
Take I-5 to Centralia, exit 82 and into downtown for a day browsing the many antiques stores in downtown and at the Centralia Square Antique Mall. Murals depicting days gone by adorn many of the exterior walls of wonderful turn-of-the-century buildings. Be sure to stop for lunch at McMenamins Olympic Club Hotel and Theater. This charming hotel is the site of the capture of the notorious train robber, Roy Gardner in 1921. You can also shoot a game of pool or watch a movie, and even spend the night in one of the hotel's 27 restored rooms.
Day 3
Today take I-5 south to Hwy 12, exit 68 and visit DeGoede's Bulb Farm, known for its spectacular tulip fields and lovely gardens. There are plants, flowers and gifts to purchase. Travel on and take SR 7 through Morton to Paradise at Mt. Rainier. View breathtaking waterfalls all along the route and hike through lush alpine valleys. Now take SR 124 to Packwood and stay in one of the charming lodges in this quaint village nestled at the base of Mt. Rainier. On your return to I-5, take SR 508 in Morton and visit the famous Raintree Nursery. 508 then takes you back to I-5.
