Trains
Recently featured on “Northwest Backroads,” the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad runs steam train rides along the Chehalis River during the summer months. The relaxing and nostalgic excursion delights both the young and the old. Relax while traveling past small farms, wooded areas and along riverbanks. Ride in the open platform car and name the many kinds of plants. Or just focus on the fruit trees, the telltale sign of the kinds of fruit the railway workers carried in their lunches.
The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad travels through the foothills of majestic Mount Rainier and the volcano valleys of East County. Look for the occasional long runs from Elbe to Morton. Or leave the car behind and take Amtrak to Centralia. Passenger trains stop at Centralia's depot several times a day.
